Sage 50 - Making Tax Digital Submission Error Guide

Sage 50 MTD Submission Error: Fix VAT Return Filing Failures

Sage 50 failed to submit a VAT return via Making Tax Digital -- showing "Submission failed", "HMRC connection error", or "Authentication expired."

At QuickFix Bookkeeping, MTD submission errors in Sage 50 are time-critical -- VAT returns have fixed deadlines and HMRC penalties apply immediately. Most MTD errors are authentication or connectivity issues that resolve in under 15 minutes.

The QuickFix Bookkeeping Distinction

MTD errors in Sage 50 are almost always authentication failures, not data errors.

Authentication expired

The HMRC connection token in Sage 50 has a 180-day lifespan. After 180 days it expires and every submission fails until you re-authenticate through HMRC Gateway. This is the most common MTD error.

Connectivity block

Sage 50 cannot reach HMRC's MTD API because a firewall or antivirus is blocking connections to api.service.hmrc.gov.uk.

Check first: In Sage 50, go to Settings > Company Preferences > VAT > MTD Settings and check authorisation status. If it shows "Expired" or "Not authorised," re-authentication is the fix.

What it means

Sage 50 failed to submit a VAT return via Making Tax Digital -- showing "Submission failed", "HMRC connection error", or "Authentication expired."

What Causes This Error?

HMRC Authentication Token Expired

The HMRC OAuth token expires after 180 days. After expiry, every submission attempt fails until the business owner re-authenticates through HMRC Government Gateway.

🌐

Firewall Blocking HMRC MTD API

Outbound connections to api.service.hmrc.gov.uk are blocked by a corporate firewall, local security software, or ISP filtering.

🔢

VAT Registration Number Mismatch

The VAT number in Sage 50 Company Preferences does not exactly match the VAT number registered with HMRC. HMRC rejects submissions where the VRN in the payload does not match their records.

📅

Wrong Obligation Period Selected

The VAT return being submitted does not match an open obligation period in HMRC's system. Attempting to submit for an already-filed period produces a submission error.

How to Fix This Error

METHOD 1Re-Authenticate Sage 50 with HMRCExpired token -- most common fix
1

In Sage 50: Settings > Company Preferences > VAT > MTD Settings > Re-authorise.

2

A browser window opens to HMRC's Government Gateway login page.

3

Log in with your HMRC Government Gateway credentials (the business owner's credentials).

4

Grant Sage 50 permission to submit returns. The new token is valid for 180 days.

METHOD 2Whitelist HMRC Domains in FirewallNetwork connectivity block
1

Add these domains to your firewall whitelist: api.service.hmrc.gov.uk and www.tax.service.gov.uk

2

Also whitelist in antivirus web filtering if applicable.

3

Restart Sage 50 after updating firewall rules.

4

Attempt the MTD submission again.

METHOD 3Verify VAT Number and Obligation PeriodData validation errors
1

In Sage 50: Settings > Company Preferences > VAT -- verify the VAT Registration Number matches exactly what is on your HMRC VAT certificate.

2

Log into HMRC Business Tax Account and confirm which VAT periods are open and outstanding.

3

Ensure the return you are submitting matches an open HMRC obligation period.

4

Correct any mismatch and re-attempt the submission.
