Check first: In Sage 50, go to Settings > Company Preferences > VAT > MTD Settings and check authorisation status. If it shows "Expired" or "Not authorised," re-authentication is the fix.

HMRC Authentication Token Expired
The HMRC OAuth token expires after 180 days. After expiry, every submission attempt fails until the business owner re-authenticates through HMRC Government Gateway.
Firewall Blocking HMRC MTD API
Outbound connections to api.service.hmrc.gov.uk are blocked by a corporate firewall, local security software, or ISP filtering.
VAT Registration Number Mismatch
The VAT number in Sage 50 Company Preferences does not exactly match the VAT number registered with HMRC. HMRC rejects submissions where the VRN in the payload does not match their records.
Wrong Obligation Period Selected
The VAT return being submitted does not match an open obligation period in HMRC's system. Attempting to submit for an already-filed period produces a submission error.
