What the QuickBooks Refresher Tool Does
The QuickBooks Refresher Tool (also called QBRefresher) is a free Intuit utility that stops all running QuickBooks processes, clears temporary lock files, and restarts the QuickBooks Database Server Manager and related background services. It resolves issues where QuickBooks will not open, freezes on the loading screen, or returns errors immediately after an update.
When to Use the QuickBooks Refresher Tool
QuickBooks Won't Open
If QuickBooks launches and immediately closes, or the loading screen hangs indefinitely, the Refresher Tool clears the stuck process.
After a Failed Update
An interrupted QuickBooks update can leave background services in a broken state. Running the Refresher Tool after the update attempt often restores normal operation.
QuickBooks Freezing or Crashing
Repeated crashes during normal use -- especially in multi-user mode -- are often caused by a stuck QBDBMgrN or QBCFMonitorService process that the Refresher Tool can clear.
Error on Startup
Errors like Error 6000 or Unrecoverable Error appearing immediately on launch are common Refresher Tool use cases.
How to Download and Run the QuickBooks Refresher Tool
Run the QuickBooks Refresher Tool

Close QuickBooks completely. Check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and end any running QBW32.exe, QBDBMgrN.exe, or QBCFMonitorService.exe processes.

Download the QuickBooks Tool Hub from Intuit's official support page. The Refresher Tool is included inside the Tool Hub under Program Problems.

Install and open the QuickBooks Tool Hub. Accept the license agreement when prompted.

Click Program Problems in the left menu.

Click Quick Fix my Program. This runs the Refresher Tool sequence -- it stops background services, clears stuck processes, and restarts services cleanly. It takes 1 to 3 minutes.

When the tool finishes, open QuickBooks normally and test whether the issue is resolved.
Note: The standalone QBRefresher.exe was an older Intuit tool that has been superseded by the QuickBooks Tool Hub. If you find QBRefresher.exe on an older support page, use the Tool Hub instead -- it is the current supported version and includes additional repair capabilities.

Restart your computer after the diagnostic tool completes, then reopen QuickBooks.
