Xero Error ยท Account Access Locked

How to Fix Xero Account Locked Error

Xero displays "Your account has been locked" or "Too many failed login attempts" after repeated incorrect password attempts, suspicious activity detection, or subscription issues. The lockout blocks all access until resolved.

At QuickFix Bookkeeping, Xero account lockouts split into three types: temporary security lockouts (auto-unlock after 30 min), 2FA lockouts (need recovery codes), and subscription lockouts (need payment update). Identifying which type determines the fix.

What Causes This Issue?

Repeated Wrong Password

Five or more incorrect password attempts trigger an automatic 30-minute lockout. Common after password change you forgot.

Two-Factor Authentication Failure

Lost access to the authenticator app or phone receiving SMS codes. 2FA recovery codes are the only way back in without contacting Xero.

Suspicious Login Pattern

Login attempts from unusual locations or IP addresses trigger Xero's fraud detection. Verification email or admin approval required.

Subscription Lapsed or Suspended

Failed billing or extended inactivity locks the organisation until payment is updated. Different from a personal account lockout.

How to Fix This Issue

METHOD 1 Wait Out the Temporary Lockout (30 minutes) Security lockout
1

If the lockout was triggered by failed password attempts, the auto-unlock happens after 30 minutes. Do not keep trying -- it resets the timer.

2

Use the 30-minute window to verify you have the correct password. Reset it via Forgot password if uncertain.

3

After 30 minutes, retry login with the verified password.

METHOD 2 Use 2FA Recovery Codes 2FA lockout
1

Recovery codes were provided when 2FA was first enabled (you should have saved them somewhere safe).

2

At the 2FA prompt, click Use a recovery code instead. Enter one of your saved codes. Each code works once.

3

After login, immediately go to Settings and then Two-step authentication to reset 2FA and generate fresh recovery codes.

METHOD 3 Reset Password if Locked Out of Email Email recovery
1

On the login page, click Forgot password?. Enter your Xero email.

2

Check your inbox (and spam) for the reset link. Click it and set a new password.

3

If you no longer have access to the email address, you must contact Xero Support directly with proof of identity and account ownership.

METHOD 4 Verify Subscription Status Billing lockout
1

If the lockout message references billing or subscription, the account owner needs to log in to Subscription and billing at xero.com.

2

Update the payment method or settle the outstanding balance. The lockout lifts within a few hours of successful payment.

3

For accountant/bookkeeper users, the practice owner must resolve subscription issues -- they cannot be resolved from a sub-user account.
